a birthday tableware set that pays homage to retro video games
For this personal project, I honed in on a novelty that still remains trendy today: the old school video games of the 1980s and early 1990s. As a personal fan of gaming, I have always been drawn to the early 8-bit graphic styles, despite the limited color palette and data storage capacity.
This birthday party tableware set (shown above) includes six items total: a lunch napkin, a beverage napkin, a table cover, a 9 oz. cup, a 7 inch plate, and a 9 inch plate (listed from left to right, top to bottom).
The icons used for the tableware are inspired by a number of retro video games. For example, the gold coin and the yellow star are similar to the icons used in the Super Mario Bros. games. The colorful bursts loosely reference old school space games, such as Galaga and Space Invaders. The blue lines in the background pay homage to the many mazes found in the PAC-MAN games.
The above image is a section of the full table cover. The white area at the top extends across the entire top surface of the table, while the blue area underneath is the table skirt that hangs over the side of the table. The pattern at the bottom repeats across the entire length of the table.
The above image is the full wraparound design for the 9 oz. cup.
Each quarter section of the lunch and beverage napkins has a different design. The above and below images show how the napkins look when they are completely folded out.
